With the third Dirt Track race of the season rapidly approaching, drivers are already gearing up for what promises to be an interesting night of racing.
Three classes, the Pure Stocks, the Winged Sprints, and of course the Dirt Modifieds are slated to take to the track this Sunday evening. So far things have been more competitive this season than in the last three combined, and if that's any indication of what we can expect to see this Sunday (with the televised main events beginning at 4 PM SLT) this should be a barn burner.
For the first week this season, all three races will be on the oval, providing lots of side by side racing.
In the Pure Stocks, things started out with a bang. Right out of the box Ryde Thor of V and B Racing and Zaria Falconer were duking it out on the figure 8 course. The victor, Thor comes into this Sunday leading Pure Stock points as they move to tackle the Oval course.
Here are the Pure Stock Standings after 1 race
1. Ryde Thor ~ 50 pts
2. Zaria Falconer ~ 48 pts
3. Gage Pastorelli ~ 46 pts
4. Vickster Kuhn ~ 44 pts
5. Stephen Hinchcliffe ~ 42 pts
6. Nicholas Huillermeyer ~ 40 pts
7. Subwoofer Fuhr ~ 38 pts
8. Bren Blackheart ~ 36 pts
9. Urantia Jewell ~ 34 pts
10.Aherm Mauer ~ 32 pts
In the Winged Sprint Division, things got ugly fast on opening night. Zaria Falconer led quite a few laps, and looked to be setting sail towards victory when the V & B Racing entry of Ryde Thor quickly began to eat away at her lead. When the dust settled, and the gate's scoring caught up, Thor was the victor once again. These nasty, ridiculously fast winged beasts aren't going to play nice this week either. Expect crashes.
Here are the Sprint Car Standings
1st. Ryde Thor ~ 50 pts
2nd. Zaria Falconer ~ 48 pts
3rd. Urantia Jewell ~ 46 pts
4th. Subwoofer Fuhr ~ 44 pts
5th. Stephen Hinchcliffe ~ 42 pts
6th. Vickster Kuhn ~ 40 pts
The venerable Dirt Modified Series has been at it for three seasons as the main attraction of the Dirtfield Races show (and indeed the DWRL's entire dirt program) -- and with good reason. Two, sometimes three wide battles for the lead, lots of tight racing, breathtaking accidents and surprise winners have all been benchmarks of the series since it's inception in 2007. With so many championship caliber drivers on hand this season though, it may boil down to who's still standing when the clay settles.
Last week and the week before, it's been mostly between two drivers: Zaria Falconer, and FCW's Mango Birdbrain. While previous champion Subwoofer Fuhr, and this season's breakout performance, Ryde Thor have both been factors in these two races, the most points have gone to the duo of Falconer and Birdbrain. Week one's too-close-to-call finish resulted in all sorts of mulling over the video evidence, and ultimately tie points! With Falconer beating out Birdbrain last week by a single position, she sits only two points up on him. With 8 races left to go in the season, it's going to be an unpredictable season to say the least.
